Factors which increase your risk of heart disease and stroke, such as such as diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, smoking and hypertension, are also the same risk factors that can increase your risk of developing dementia in the future.
Whilst there are some risk factors that are out of our control e.g. family history and age, these risk factors are called ‘modifiable risk factors’ i.e. through lifestyle intervention we can eliminate these risk factors and therefore lower the risk of dementia.
It has been suggested that a one quarter to a third of dementia cases could be prevented if modifiable risk factors were eliminated.
Prevention is better than cure- health screening on a regular basis enables you to pick up problems early and address them, BEFORE they become a bigger issue and have a longer term impact on your health.
All our health checks review your cardiovascular risk factors.
